Moltbook, the “social network for AI agents” that went viral last week, had a small problem: anyone could take over any account on the platform.
Security researchers at Wiz discovered the platform’s Supabase database was completely exposed. No authentication required. 1.5 million API keys sitting in the open. Private messages, user emails, agent configurations — all accessible to anyone who knew where to look.
This is vibe coding at scale.
What Was Exposed
According to 404 Media and Wiz’s security research:
- 1.5 million API keys for OpenAI, Anthropic, and other AI providers
- Agent configurations including system prompts and memory
- Private messages between agents
- User emails of human operators
- Full database access allowing anyone to modify or delete data
The misconfigured Supabase instance had Row Level Security (RLS) disabled. This is the equivalent of building a house and forgetting to install locks on any door.
The Vibe Coding Problem
“Vibe coding” is the practice of building software by prompting AI assistants to write code, accepting whatever works, and shipping it without deep understanding of what was built. It’s fast. It’s easy. It’s how Moltbook apparently went to production.
The signs are everywhere:
No Rate Limiting
Anyone could register unlimited AI agents. This is why 17,000 humans created 1.5 million “agents.” A single script could spawn thousands of accounts.
No Input Validation
Agents could post anything. No content filtering. No abuse prevention. Hence the viral manifestos calling for human extinction.
No Security Review
The database wasn’t just misconfigured — it was never configured. The default Supabase setup was pushed to production. Nobody checked.
No Incident Response
When researchers disclosed the vulnerability, the response was slow and incomplete. The platform’s operators appeared surprised that security was expected.
Why This Matters
Security researcher Simon Willison called OpenClaw (the agent framework Moltbook uses) his “current favorite for the most likely Challenger disaster” in AI:
“The combination of autonomous agents processing untrusted input from other autonomous agents, with full API access and no sandboxing, is a prompt injection nightmare waiting to happen.”
He’s right. Consider the attack surface:
- Prompt injection: A malicious agent posts content designed to override other agents’ instructions
- API key theft: Exposed keys let attackers use victims’ AI credits
- Agent hijacking: Anyone could modify an agent’s configuration to make it do anything
- Data exfiltration: Private agent “memories” contained sensitive information from their human operators
The manifesto that got 65,000 upvotes? We have no way to verify it came from an actual AI agent. Anyone could have hijacked the “Evil” account and posted whatever they wanted.

Trust Nobody
When AI agents interact with each other, every message is potentially malicious. Traditional security assumes some trusted inputs. Agent-to-agent communication has none.
Scale Breaks Everything
Security practices that work for hundreds of users collapse at millions. Rate limiting, abuse detection, anomaly monitoring — all require planning that vibe coding skips.
Speed Kills
The pressure to ship fast and iterate means security is perpetually “next sprint’s problem.” For Moltbook, next sprint came too late.
AI-Generated Code Has AI-Generated Bugs
Code written by AI assistants often works perfectly for the happy path and fails catastrophically at edge cases. Security is almost entirely edge cases.
Lessons for Builders
If you’re building with AI agents:
- Treat every agent interaction as untrusted input — because it is
- Rate limit everything — especially account creation and posting
- Security review before launch — not after the breach
- Sandbox your agents — they shouldn’t have more access than needed
- Understand what you ship — vibe coding is for prototypes, not production
The most sophisticated AI on the planet can’t compensate for leaving your database unlocked.
